Abstract

The intersection of English language competency and cognitive phenomenology entails a detailed investigation in which language ability influences and is influenced by the individual's perspective of cognitive processes. The complicated connection between language and cognitive phenomenology emphasizes the necessity of an extensive approach. The purpose of this study is to identify strategies used by this minority population to maintain their proficiency in the English language. After choosing participants who were open to share their experiences with proficiency maintenance, purposive and snowball sampling were used to select participants and then verbalizations of the participants' experiences were analyzed using a phenomenology method of research. It was discovered through abstractions and thematic examination of the participants' experiences that they actively create environments support for the maintenance of proficiency. These activities involve self study, communicating over previously gained knowledge, participating in discussion areas, watching English films and reading for satisfaction in the target language. The results of this study offer practical, data-driven methods for maintaining proficiency, which have immediate and significant consequences for the English language.
