An Archaeological Perspective on Hui-style Residential Architecture: Heritage Protection, Contemporary Significance, and Cultural Identity

Abstract

As a significant component of traditional Chinese architecture, Hui-style residential architecture embodies a rich cultural connotation and architectural craftsmanship. This paper aims to explore the heritage protection, contemporary significance, and cultural identity of Hui-style residential buildings, and to deeply analyze their status and value in the history of Chinese architecture. Firstly, through a comprehensive analysis of the historical origins, regional distribution, and architectural characteristics of Hui-style dwellings, the development and evolution process of these dwellings across different historical periods is revealed. Secondly, by integrating relevant research and policy documents from both domestic and international sources, this paper systematically reviews the current status, policies, regulations, and practical experiences related to the heritage protection of Hui-style residential architecture, and evaluates the existing problems and challenges in current conservation efforts. Subsequently, it discusses the multifaceted meanings and functions of Hui-style residential architecture in contemporary society, including its positive impacts on tourism development, local economic growth, and cultural inheritance. Finally, this paper examines the relationship between Hui-style residential architecture and local cultural identity, analyzing its significance to local social cohesion and cultural confidence. The research presented herein will contribute to a deeper understanding of the historical value and cultural significance of Hui-style dwellings, providing theoretical and practical guidance for their future protection and inheritance.
