Abstract

This paper delves into the profound implications of regional integration and global value chains on ancient trade and economic geography, with a specific focus on archaeological sites in the Mediterranean region. Initially, it analyzes the role of regional economic integration in promoting ancient free trade ideologies and the necessity of filling gaps in trade rules and cooperation mechanisms within the Belt and Road Initiative. Subsequently, the paper meticulously examines the direct impact of regional integration and global value chains on ancient trade, including the increase in trade volume, changes in trade structure, enhancements in price competitiveness, and influences on trade policies. In terms of economic geography, the study explores the reorganization of industrial geography, imbalances in regional economic development, improvements in urban and regional competitiveness, and transformations in infrastructure and transportation networks. By employing a multidisciplinary approach, integrating archaeology, archaeometry, environmental archaeology, and other methodologies, this paper comprehensively reveals the deep-seated effects of regional integration and global value chains on the ancient economic landscape of the Mediterranean region.
