Abstract

The historical and cultural heritage (CH) aspect includes various passed-down customs and beliefs that define a society’s identity. It plays an important role in remembrance and supporting cultural variability. Preservation and revitalization of this heritage help it further pass through generations and preserve cultural values. The objective of this study is to analyse the roles and complexities involved in the conservation and revitalization of both urban historical and CH with emphasis on challenges, best practices, and sustainable conservation approaches. We collected and evaluated data using integrated quantitative and qualitative methods. Our research incorporated self-administered questionnaires and individual interviews with 118 participants from cultural sectors and governmental agencies. The obtained response data were analysed using SPSS analytical tool while regression analysis is used to analyse quantitative data from questionnaires. Our research found that the lack of professional involvement, inappropriate surveillance, unstable political environments, economic incentives and funding for revitalization, lack of promotion of CH, lack of support for revitalization, and growing urbanization are the main factors influencing the protection and revitalization of urban historical and CH. This study focuses on the role of community engagement and principles of sustainability in enhancing the revitalization and preservation of urban history, and CH.
