Interdisciplinary Integration of Musicology and Archaeology: The Spread and Evolution of the Pipa Along the Silk Road
Abstract
The pipa, a musical instrument deeply rooted in Chinese culture, has a history that spans across the Silk Road, with origins tracing back to the Persian “barbat” and Central Asian prototypes. This study examines the cross-disciplinary approach of integrating musicology and archaeology to understand the pipa’s dissemination and evolution. The instrument’s journey from Central Asia to China, Persia, and Europe showcases the profound impact of cultural exchange on musical instruments and practices. Archaeological excavations along the Silk Road have unearthed instruments and manuscripts that document the pipa’s transformation, while musicological analysis reveals the dynamic interplay between the instrument and the musical practices of the regions it traversed. This study underscores the significance of cross-cultural interactions in shaping musical traditions and highlights the transformative power of cultural exchange. Future research should continue to explore the interplay between musicology and archaeology to deepen our understanding of the pipa’s historical development and its impact on musical traditions.
